Grow a Linux VM disk online: rescan, growpart, pvresize, lvextend and xfs_growfs

echo 1 > /sys/class/block/sda/device/rescan; growpart /dev/sda 3; pvresize /dev/sda3; lvextend -r -l +100%FREE /dev/vg/lv. Without LVM: resize2fs or xfs_growfs. All online.

LVM: the volume group will not activate after a power failure

First pvs/vgs/lvs -a: is a PV missing or did the thin pool fail? vgchange -ay –activationmode degraded for LVM RAID; partial only to copy data read-only; lvconvert –repair for thin pools; vgcfgrestore if the metadata is broken.

Proxmox: error: disk 'lvmid/…' not found at grub rescue

Old GRUB cannot parse LVM metadata once it wraps around the buffer. From the ISO: lvcreate -L 4M pve -n grubtemp and reboot. Then grub-efi-amd64 or grub-install so it does not come back.
